Originally born as a popular festival in 1873, the Viareggio Carnival has grown over time into an internationally renowned event, attracting visitors from all over the world each year.
The heart of the celebration lies in the parades of the large allegorical floats, made of papier-mâché according to the ancient Viareggio artisan tradition. Reaching heights of up to twenty metres, these floats are true moving works of art, the result of months of work and outstanding technical skill. Through monumental figures, music and scenic effects, they use irony and satire to portray current affairs, politics, customs and society.
Alongside the main floats, group masquerades, smaller floats and individual masks take part in the parade, creating a festive and engaging atmosphere for all ages. The famous Viareggio Seafront Promenade becomes the stage for a unique open-air spectacle filled with colours, confetti, music and joy.
The Carnival is not limited to the parades alone: throughout the event, the city hosts side events, parties, shows, concerts and cultural initiatives, as well as areas dedicated to children and families. The undisputed symbol of the Carnival is Burlamacco, its official mask and an icon of joy and tradition.
An intense and engaging experience that blends art, creativity and entertainment, making the Viareggio Carnival an unmissable event on the Italian cultural calendar.
